Wow - this is exactly what I needed to read. I too am a creative without a classic modality to dig my hands in to and have been trying to find what kind of roles I'm looking for. Thank you!
This was exactly what I needed to read about in this moment. It really expanded my knowledge so thank you so incredibly much! It was so in depth and shared great advice about the courses you recommend taking (I wonder if the London photography one is still available & if internationals can join?), also curious to know what makes a good stand out portfolio?
Should we be designing/customising the website a lot so it stands out, or is it more about aligning the content we put in (to make it look luxury) and using a nice template?
Like Alexis’ comment I’m curious to know how you explain your reference/decisions/ sell your ideas to your clients. In the luxury fashion industry, do art directors really show references of great photographers like Irving Penn and have a list of great references up their sleeves? How important is it to read a lot/know about fashion/photography/ styling etc. for idea generation on new projects?
Sorry for the loaded question! I’m not sure if I made myself really clear, I’m trying to understand what it takes to work in the industry you are in and I would love to be there!🤍
Hey Taneia—thank you so much for this!! I love hearing feedback, it truly makes me so happy when my content resonates with people! The LiOP photography course is still up and running, would highly recommend. And what great ideas! I wrote these straight down as content ideas. Ooh I could do SUCH a deep dive on pitching—advice and some funny stories. This has really inspired me, thank you!
This was so incredibly thorough and genuine. Thank you for sharing your non-linear experience, it's so validating. Definitely taking notes from this piece!
I love this!! As someone who dreams of becoming an art director but studying something different (PR), it was very comforting to hear about your journey. I am so excited to see what you’ll be publishing next 😊 Also content idea for you - I would love to hear you break down one of your projects and explain the references and meaning behind each decision you made. Like a behind the scenes of your creative process!
So glad this was helpful!! PR has so many transferable and useful skills to art direction. Even if you got a PR role where art directors also work and try to learn off them—just like my own journey, sometimes a zig zag route is the best! You get the most experience and unique skill set.
Ooh I love this idea. I’ll have to dive through the archives. Definitely saving this content concept for an article sometime soon🫶
Thank you so much for this I'm finishing high school in less than 18days and I had been thinking of taking short courses and maybe even shadowing people who are in industries that have to do with art/fashion this was everything I needed thank you ♡
This was unbelievably valuable, your advice is concrete, thoughtful and actionable. I'm a full-time hand illustrator in luxury fashion. It's an extremely niche role and a bit of a dead end. I feel I have no-where to go after this. I'm doing everything in my power to level up on the side, digitise my art skills (slowly learning the adobe suite) and build a portfolio beyond hand-illustration. There is so little advice out there on topics like this, so this article is like gold to me! Thank you :)
Oh my goodness! Comments like this make my heart warm—I poured so much into this article so I’m so happy this was valuable to you! Please don’t feel like you’re at a dead end. If you’re in the luxury fashion space already, you have a relevant network which is amazing. Don’t be scared to tap into that, put yourself out there for work opportunities or grab a coffee with someone who’s commissioned you previously. Building a portfolio of passion projects is the best way to show your own style too—before clients and opinions get involved! Sounds like you’re totally on the right track. Let me know if there’s any other topics you’d be interested in reading a deep dive on, I’m hoping to make this a mini series to pull back the curtains a little and make the industry feel more accessible. And of course, please share if you think this could help others! Appreciate your support and love🫶🥹
Thank you Lottie! Super encouraging :) there's deffo other stuff I'm dying to know about art direction, not off the top of my head though, but I'll chew on it. I really appreciate the value you give and I'm excited to read your future posts!<3
