Art Over Algorithm #2: Unique Sources of Creative Genius
Deep Diving Into 3 Creatives Who Find Inspiration Outside The Mainstream
I recently wrote about something that felt equal parts vulnerable and liberating: the gnawing suspicion that I’ve never had an original thought in my life. As a creative, admitting that your work might not be unique, new, or fresh isn’t exactly the vibe you want to put out there. But as I wrote, the process surprised me—it became strangely therapeutic. The realisation that maybe, just maybe, no one has ever had a truly original thought was oddly comforting. Everyone has influences; it’s what makes us human. And honestly? It gave me my spark back.
That said, there’s a line between not having an original thought and straight-up regurgitating the same tired trends, week after week, from your explore feed.
There’s a big difference between lazily replicating what’s viral and thoughtfully drawing inspiration from unexpected, obscure, or downright exciting places.
Sure, perhaps none of us may be wholly original, but it doesn’t mean we can’t strive for something richer.
Which brings me to this month’s Art Over The Algorithm.
This series is about stepping away from the echo chamber and spotlighting creators who find inspiration outside the mainstream.
Highlighting the creatives who are digging where others don’t, pulling magic from places you’d never think to look.
So let’s dive into their worlds and see what makes them masters of their craft.
This paid-subscriber series is your monthly dose of inspiration, spotlighting fresh talent and sharing insights to ignite your creative spark. I’m not about gatekeeping—but let’s be real, these take a lot of time to write (and sometimes, it feels like I’m handing over all my hard-earned secrets!).
This article spotlights three creatives I deeply admire—a visionary creative director, a photography duo blending CGI, AI, and reality, and a mixed-media artist. Each of them finds inspiration in places we all have access to, yet far removed from the mainstream algorithms and endless digital feeds.
